Flame maple · chatoyance
The wood moves when you do.
A flame-figured maple top is chatoyant: its stripes catch the light at different angles, so the light and dark bands trade places as you move past.
Liquid light
Then the colour starts to move.
In the late 1960s, light shows were made by hand: coloured oil and water swirled on overhead projectors behind the band. This one is drawn fresh every frame.
Six strings · six mirrors
One guitar, turned six ways.
Five copies fan out of the first, one for every string: E A D G B E. Scrolling turns the mandala.
A2 and E3 · a fifth
Two notes, one shape.
Play the A string with the E above it and the two waves meet almost exactly three swings to two. Drawn against each other, they trace these loops.
Illustration · a 3D model after a reference photo · the 3 : 2 loops are exact

How the film listens
Colour that follows the music
The film runs on its own until you choose a song. Then your browser's own audio analyser reads the song live, every frame.
The louder the music, the harder the strings swing and the faster the colours flow, and the pitch where the sound is centred turns the colours round. The file stays on your device; nothing is uploaded.
